The junior weekend always start with Warren and Phoebe and  the under 8 players enjoying their intra club hockey at Farm Rd. These 30 or so players are graduates of our hook in 2 hockey program that took place earlier in the year and on Friday nights spend time having fun improving their skills and playing small sided games.  We have 50+ players from hook in 2 hockey who have moved on to under 8, 10 or 12 hockey.

It seemed to be  a weekend of absences, making getting teams on the park challenging.

Juniors had a big night at Farm Rd against Waverley. The Under 14 shield after  a couple of tough rounds started the game with no bench, and probably played their best team game for the season, with 2 goals to Ed Fitzgerald and a goal to Will Carruthers, Sam Jones and Lachie Paice the Southern team won 5-0.  The 16 Mixed shield followed and  goals from Max Eddington and two from Craig Marais  were not enough, with Waverley taking the game 5-3. The Under 16 mixed pennant with Erin doubling up from shield and Matt doubling up, the pennant team had a strong 7-0 won.

While at Brighton, Under 14 pennant had a 1-0 win over Mentone, with Charlie scoring the one goal giving them top spot on the ladder after 5 rounds. The under 16 south red played Bayside and had their third win in a row. The under 16 south black at Dandenong had a slow start to the game, then with rousing message from Greg at half time, they came alive for a 3-0 win with a hat trick to Liam Lewis. The wins from black and red leave them 1st and 5th on the ladder.  Also at Dandenong the under 14 south played St Bede’s red. Thanks to Bryn and Lucien for making the dash from Dendy to Dandy to fill in. The 14 south team is improving each week, with a 5-3 loss this week.

The 14 and 16 girls had road trips on Friday night. The 14 girls trekked to Geelong, where sadly their famous pork rolls ran out, but the girls played a great game for a 6-0 win.

The 16 girls, now in pennant grade, tripped to Greensborough. A great test to see how the girls would go in the pennant grade, against Burra, 2nd on the ladder. The trip timing to Burra is always challenging and the girls started with only 8 players, and with the team short, Burra managed to score 2 goals early. Alaina took a ball to the head, leaving them with only 10 for most of the second half, but Southern still had most of the play. Great work girls going down 2-0. Alaina great to hear you are ok.

Also at Greensborough the under 18 crew were playing Burra, who had a 20-0 win over Frankston the week before. Not letting that faze them,  the Southern team were up to the task with a 2-2 draw.

On Saturday morning at the SNHC the under 12 girls shield had a 1-1 draw with Greensborough with Puck and Lulu showing their style that had them selected in the under 12 SSV team, while the under 12 boys shield had a tense 4-1 win over Brumbies, wonder coach Warren even took to the field to direct the players.  Great hat trick by Max Hoult.  And definitely a win to celebrate

 

At Frankston the Under 12 south started the morning against Mornington going down 3-1, thanks to Xavier, Mack and  William for filling in. Under 12 mixed pennant followed, they played a closely contested game, with Riley scoring their first goal of the season, and went down 2-1 to Mornington. This under 12 mixed pennant team deserve special mention, this group of pocket rockets have had a tough start to the season. A very young team with seven of them still able to play under 10s, and 12 of them having moved up from under 10 half field or quarter field last year.

At 8.20 on Saturday morning our under 10 quarter field teams play in the Northern Sharks League against Mentone and Bayside.

Following the quarter field, the Under 12 girls pennant played Mornington, Sienna Hoult not to be outdone by brother Max scored 2, and Charlotte Barker 1 in the 3-3 draw.  Thanks to Charlotte Carruthers and Georgia Ghuliani for helping out the team. 

The under 10 girls had a tough match, with little legs a little worn out from the helping out under 12s and finished 1-0 down.

Premier League

The men’s premier league team showed their might against Mentone with three Penalty Corner drag flicks from Matt L’huillier in their 6-1 win. The women’s premier league team, 2-0 down at half time, held that score  for most of the second half, with Mentone breaking through at 6 minutes to go, and then with Caitlin in as kicking back another penalty corner and the Southern ladies went down 4-0. The men’s reserves won their game 2-1 while the women were 3-0 down.

Men’s

Pennant D suffered their first loss for the season with a 5-0 defeat at PEGS, while Pennant E continued their success with a 2-0 win over Burra at Burra. Last years premiership winning  Pennant F team continued their climb back up the ladder with a 2-5 win over Footscray. The  Pennant A  SNHC round, saw the Southern boys against Essendon. It was great to see another junior Tom Curtis step up to senior ranks and play in the pennant A game. After a tough start to the season they took the points with a  5-3 win with 2 goals to Lachie Eddington and great work from Ed Arnold  on field in his first pennant A game.  Metro A and B finished the men’s games with a win each, 1-0 over St Bede’s and 1-0 over Casey.

Women

Sunday was women’s day at Farm Rd with support of some of the premier league ladies on the terrace. It started with women’s metro B against Bayside who despite best efforts finished with a 1-1 draw.. The  Pennant F ladies 5-3 over Footscray. Last were  Warren’s pennant B ladies finishing. The Pennant B team took the points giving Warren’s three teams – U16 South Red, U12 Mixed Shield and Women’s pennant B all a win. At Monash the Metro A women continued their winning way with Sammie Chew in goals.
