Burra visited us at Farm Rd on Sunday for the live streamed game. The results were not perfect, but not a bad day. 

Women’s reserves started the day on a high with a 3-0 win. The Burra women are fifth on the ladder, nine points ahead of the Southern ladies, but that didn’t matter, with the Southern women winning 2-1 with both goals to Megan Hull.

The men’s firsts had a tougher game coming back in the last minutes with a magic flick from Matt to finish down 2-3. The men’s reserves finished the day with a 5-3 win. Both men’s teams are currently in the top 8, with a lot of hockey left to go with the premier league teams having five more matches, in which Southern has a bye in the last round.

It was a tough day in the office for some of the men’s teams with absences and no-shows.

The Pennant A competition continues to be incredibly tight, and Southern in a what was a 5th vs 7th game against Altona, with only one point separating them on the ladder was a strong 5-1 win for Southern, putting them in to the four with Felix Harvey playing a great game.

Pennant D played top of the table Essendon, short of players, and the result was a depressing 10-1 loss.  Lets move forward to next week, it is another game.

Pennant E in a 2nd vs 3rd game at Yarra also had a tough day going down 5-4.

Pennant F played in the wind at Mornington, after leading 3-0 at half time, with the change in direction Mornington managed to fight back, but Southern finished with a 5-4 win, keeping their top of the ladder position.

Metro A finished in a  3-3 draw against St Bedes, thanks Stephen Blatherwick for stepping in to help the goalie challenges.  In Metro B the young players did their “thing” again with Nick and Edward Fitzgerald both scoring two goals in the 6-3 win over Collegians.

Women’s metro B started the games at Farm Rd on Saturday morning, with the biggest challenge the wind, thankfully no-one was injured when the goals were blown over. Have you seen how heavy they are? The wind strength to tip them must have been incredible. Sadly the wind didn’t quite work in favour of the Southern ladies and they drew 1-1 against Monash.

Second of the games was women’s Pennant B, fighting to keep their position in the four, in the game against Doncaster, once again the dice did not roll well for them, and the 3rd v 5th game finished in a 1 all draw, with   women’s section leader Alisia Simmons scoring the goal. With other results on the weekend, the ladies should remain in the four.

Women’s Pennant F had the last ladies game on Saturday afternoon against Camberwell in a 2nd v 4th game, with Southern keeping their 2nd on the ladder with a 1-0 win.

On Sunday the Metro A team continued their incredible season with a 7-0 win over TEM.
 

Friday night saw a full bill of hockey at Farm Rd.

The highlight of Friday night was the quality of the incredibly fast under 16 mixed shield game, Southern V Camberwell. The match up in round at Koornang had Camberwell take the points 3-1, but Southern turned it around on Friday. Camberwell had the play for the first 15 minutes, but Southern team kept their composure and fought through the speed, to win 3-2 with Trent playing a really strong game.

The Southern 14 mixed shield also played Camberwell.  Camberwell are clearly top of the 14 shield competition winning every game by at least 3 goals. In Round 4 Camberwell had a convincing 4-0 win against Southern, but there was nothing convincing the in 2-1 win to Camberwell on Friday. At half time the scoreline was 0-0, the Southern team playing great hockey. Cambwerwell got two very quick goals in the second half, to have a 2-0 lead. A brilliant pass across the face of the D  by Nick to brother Ed for a slick deflection was not quite enough, and the Southern players couldn’t quite get it back. The 2-1 loss is the closest anyone has got to Camberwell this year. Great work team.

Also at Farm Rd on Friday, the 14 mixed pennant, 3rd on the ladder played top of the ladder Brumbies. A thrilling game, with Brumbies up 3-0 with seven minutes to go, 2 great team goals scored in the last minutes. Some great defending work kept out a lot of the KBH attack. Rory played an awesome game in goals, and a special mention to Thomas who saved multiple shots on goal, literally on the goal line.  With a bit of luck the boys will be able keep up the work to keep their place in the four over the next few weeks.

The last game of the night saw the under 18s play a very undermanned Yarra Valley, Southern winning 9-0.

The under 16 south teams continue their great year with both teams winning. Both teams had stand in coaches for the night, but they were not let down by some great results. The black team beat Bayside 5-0, while red had a 7-1 win over Waverley. The two continue to vie to be the teams in the four.

Under 16 pennant had a tough game at Dandenong against Knox, with Knox taking the points with a 4-1 win. The Under 14 south continue a challenging year playing at Dandenong against Bayside with Bayside taking the points. Thanks to Lydia Condon from under 12 girls helping out.

The under 14 girls continue their incredible season under the coaching of Shan and her team of assistants with a 10-1 win over Donnie. The the under 16 pennant girls with Lex, Megan and LJ coaching have continued their roll in pennant with a hard fought 3-2 win over 3rd on the ladder Brumbies. This keeps the girls in the four. Massive thanks for Evie Stansby who doubled up as a goalie in 16s and did a great job, and also to Zo-ellen Stannus for helping out the girls.

On Saturday morning the under 10 quarter field teams continue their inter club competition with the teams from Mentone and Bayside, with a host of coaches led by Chris Abaniel.

YEAH, YEAH YEAH!!!! Under 12 mixed pennant showed persvarence pays off with their second win for the season against Essendon, in gale conditions where the last ten minutes of the game were abandoned after the goals were blown over. The pennant competition is an odd competition with a huge eleven team competition.  Essendon were 7th on the ladder, making the win  an even bigger achievement.  Brilliant boys.

Under 12 mixed shield, had the challenge of actually finding the Camberwell game with most roads around it closed with the work for the rebuilding of the club room. The game itself, like any Camberwell game was tough. Camberwell are top of the ladder scoring on average 5 goals a game, winning on average by 4. So the 2-0 win to Camberwell, was a good sign for our under 12 shield team.

Under 12 girls shield suffered their first loss of the season, in their 3-1 game against Donnie, but keep their top spot on the ladder. Great work Jaimie in goals for the first time in 12 girls shield. Under 12 mixed south had a close game going down 1-0 to Casey.

Under 10 half field had a tougher day with both teams playing Waverley. The boys put up a good show against the stronger Waverley team 1-4, while the girls finished 2-6.
