Teams

Expectation for 2018 is:

• Under 18s: 2 mixed teams
• Under 16s:  4 x mixed team, 2 x girls teams
• Under 14s:  3  x mixed team, 2 girls teams
• Under 12s:  3 boys teams, 2 girls teams

Changes to Shield competition in 2018

Hockey Victoria has announced significant changes to the structure of the mixed shield competitions in 2018.

Firstly the under 12 mixed shield competition no longer exists, instead there is a boys shield and a girls shield competition.

In 2016 mixed shield competition changed a two structure competition with a South East and a North West league, where the finals saw the two leagues combine. This structure has now been removed, and mixed/boys shield will now be a two tier competition, with a Shield A and a Shield B competition. Southern United will have teams in the Shield A competition for all age groups – one of four clubs with all Shield A teams.

Changes to Under 12s in 2018

The under 12 program in 2018 has been improved to give all children a better start to their hockey life.  The under 12  competitions are no longer mixed gender.  There will be a girls competition and a boys competition. The district competition (C grade) will now be played as a half field competition for under 12s.  This has the added bonus that it provides players a better chance to have more of the play, more touches of the ball, and allows players to get a stronger feel of hockey. This concept of keeping younger players on smaller pitches is something the European countries have been doing for years, with great success.

The competition for the district half field will also be run on a term basis, a competition that runs over term 2, then another competition in term 3.  This allows players/teams  to join in term 3 which is a great step forward.
