Womens Grand Finals
The group of ladies in women’s metro A have a reputation for taking in and caring for the junior girls, and this they did again this year. With Hope, Molly and Anna from the under 14 girls team, together with Ella, Steph, Amelia and Nicola who are that bit older, and of course Sammie, the ‘more mature’ ladies have helped these younger girls, while the younger girls have provided stronger and faster legs for the team.

A special mention to Sammie Chew. Sammie has played in our women’s premier league reserves team, as well as the under 18 mixed team as a field player. During the year when a goalie was required for women’s metro A, Sammie stepped in to the goalie kit and played double up goalie for the remainder of the year. Her work has paid off, two premiership medals for the year – Under 18s – on field, and Women’s Metro A – in goals.
Men’s Grand finals
Pennant D, E, F, Metro A and B together with Premier League and reserves made finals. A great year for the men’s section. Three teams in grand finals – Pennant D, F and Metro A. Despite some great work from the teams and supporters sadly no flag.
Pennant D had the rough draw, at Footscray, where Essendon had all their teams playing. The Essendon team had been clearly on top of the ladder all year, and showed that strength in the grand final. The team of pennant D has had the support of Dylan and Packo all year guiding them all along. With the addition of Rob and Andrew through the year, the team gained strength, but just not enough.
Men’s Pennant F finished the season as minor premiers. Powerhouse pulled out all stops in the latter part of the year and took the lead in the final, with our guys coming away as runners up.
Men’s Metro A were beaten 4-2 by Doncaster in the qualifying final, to finish the normal time 2 all against them in the grand final was an awesome achievement. The penalty shoot out was not for our boys, and the finished as runners up, after finishing second on the ladder.
Three of the players in the men’s grand final teams had played in juniors this year: Jacques Carstens in Metro A was also the goalie in Under 14 mixed shield, Rylan Pease in Pennant D also the goalie in Under 16 mixed shield. Both had played in grand finals the week before for their junior team. Zach Abaniel in Pennant F played in Under 16 mixed pennant.
Junior Presentation Night
A very successful presentation night for the under 12, 14, 16 and 18 on Friday night. Great to see such a big turn out. Thanks to best and fairest presenters: Ken Walker, Phoebe Willcock, Mark Gardiner, Tamsin Nelson, Cameron Hunter and Suzie Styles.
Best and Fairest for each age group was awarded, as well as Best Team Player and Coach’s award for each team. Players who had represented the state as well as those representing Southern Metro Sharks were also acknowledged. For those finishing the formal junior hockey, were presented with a graduation award of an engraved pen.
