Legend’s Day

A great turn out on Saturday for our legend’s day. The week of celebrations started early with the mega training session on Thursday night with the under 10s, under 12s and premier leage players all training together. The under 12s and 10s then acted as guard for honour for the premier league players on Saturday. Thanks Sally Connor for organizing everything, and to the premier league players for joining the training on Thursday. Thanks also to Phoebe and the social committee for preparing and planning the lunch for our special guests.

The choccie toss was, as always, a great way for children to enjoy the fun of the day. Thanks to the junior families that contributed to the toss in the way of chocolate and of course the gold coins to play. Thanks Teal Creations, McKenzie’s, Cindy McLeish and Gwen Learey for the raffle donations. Together the choccie toss, raffles and donations led to $915 of fund raising. Thanks everyone.


Our under 10 and 12s guard of honour for Pakastani legend Waseem Ahmad, Tom Youds, Brad Marais, Joey Kenny and Nathan Ephraums. What a line up.

The legend’s day also allowed the club to thank Ron Noe for his tireless work for the club. The gorgeous garden that he maintains is now “Ronnie’s Corner”.

Fixtures

The originally fixtured mid week games for premier league this week are not occurring. Waverley have had challenges having their lights replaced, the game will be fixtured at a later date. No hockey this coming Queen’s Birthday weekend. Enjoy the weekend off.

 
Premier League Round 8 Match 9

What a day. Footscray, Legend’s Day.

The women, fourth on the ladder against Footscray, second on the ladder, and the women continue to show they are up to the task against the tough teams. A 2-1 win, the second goal a class team goal, pass across the circle for Olivia Finlayson to put it in.

The men showed their shine with a 4-0 win over the doggies, with the goals shared around the team with Oscar in his first game for Southern scoring a magic goal to get the match started. The men’s reserved follow also taking the points with a 4-0 win. While the women reserves had their first loss since round 1 0-4.

 
Men & Women’s Pennant Round 8

The women’s pennant B team played Brumbies at Elgar Park, Brumbies 2nd on the ladder against Southern 3rd. The final score line was Brumbies 1-0 over Southern, the score could have been different if it hadn’t been for an amazing save by Dom. Great work Dom.

The men’s pennant A at Mentone struggled with confusion over day of the game, let’s not say more shall we. When the full team got there, they finished 1-1.

The men’s teams struggled with many players out, thanks to the many players who doubled up or played in teams other than their own.


The men’s pennant C at the hockey centre had a team that barely resembled the standard team, but they got through. Great to see Don and Andre Fernandez playing together for Andre’s first senior game. Shannon Davey returned from the States for his first game, in three plus years. Struggling in the first 20 minutes, the team then turned around to beat TEM 4-2.

Men’s Pennant D also at the hockey centre did not have the same results, going down 0-4 to a lot stronger Brumbies team.

Men’s pennant E continue their strong season in their “new grade”, with a hat trick to David Fisher, 6-3 over Mornington. Welcome to Southern Mathew Mundy.

Women’s pennant E played at Swinburne going down 1-0, a disappointing result. Despite that the women keep their third spot on the ladder, with 3rd, 4th and 5th all sharing fifteen points.

 
Men & Women’s Metro – Round 8

The club’s metro teams continue to perform strongly with all metro teams in the four.

The women’s metro A team won 3-0 against their nemesis St Bedes in a very hard fought game, with now two games between them and the spoils one apiece. The young players are playing an awesome running game with fantastic support from the more experienced players. Two goals to Liana Tyrell and one to Jane O’Neill.

The men’s metro A team played Bayside, three points above them on the ladder, a great result, with two goals to Jason Bloms and John Leighton playing as field player this week, and one goal to Eduan Naude.

The men’s metro B team finished 4-2 over Collegians with John Leighton scoring two. Women’s metro B‘s top spot on the ladder continues to be secure with the 2-0 win over Mornington with goals to Lulu and Srijana.

 
Juniors Round 6

The girls shield teams had centre stage at Farm Rd on Friday night. The under 16 girls shield‘s first true home game, their first at the Hockey Centre against West Vic saved them travelling to Ballarat later in the season. A 5-0 win against Brumbies, a great way to start the weekend for the girls, with Molly scoring a hat trick. The under 14 girls shield did not have the same results going down to TEM.

Also at Farm Rd on Friday night the under 14 mixed pennant played Bayside, both 6 points on the ladder, and their evenness was shown in the results with both teams have a shots on goal, a Southern shot hitting the cross bar, and the game finished with a 1-1 draw. The final game of the night saw the under 18 derby. With a nice even game, red taking the points over black in a 2-1 win with Alfie scoring the winning goal late in the game.

Elsewhere around the pitches on Friday night. The under 16 mixed shield in a top of the table clash took the points in a 2-0 win over Altona, a great result with three players out. Thanks Lachie for filling in. The tussle between Craig and Cooper from Altona was quite a sight to see. The under 14 mixed shield team are coming in to form in their 2-1 win over Hawthorn. While under 16 mixed pennant keep their winning record with another win, 5-0 over Waverley.

The two under 16 south teams hit the pitch at Brighton. The red team drawing against Bayside. All the best to Amelia Andrew after a hit to the face. Hope you feel better soon. A big thanks to all who helped on the night including a Bayside paramedic parent. The black team went down 3-0 to Frankston. The under 14 south team at Monash played top of the ladder St Bedes, St Bedes too strong taking the game 3-0. The result is the ultimate good news story. In round 1, the same clash produced a 11-0 win for St Bedes, five weeks later 3-0. What a huge improvement for our 14 south team, most who have not played club hockey before.

Saturday morning at Farm Rd as always started with our quarter field teams. Following the quarter field the under 10 half field against Mentone Blue. Mixed results, with the girls having a great win, while the boys went down. The under 12 district boys team played a close game against Bayside just going down 2-1, while the under 12 district girls showed their might in a very strong win against Brunswick.

The under 12 shield girls continue their unbeaten season. Thanks to Andrew Wiseman from Footscray for the great photos of the girls.

The under 12 pennant boys went to Knox where the Knox boys proved too strong while the Under 12 shield boys with Hamish and Caleb trekking from Knox to Donnie to help out also went down to Donnie, despite some great saves from Ashton. The two teams are very young and are showing improvement every week.
