What’s on at Southern?

Our Dogs

Our dogs continue to feature in the wrap. This week the Marais and Okhuizen dogs – Chai and Boris. No surprise – Boris with the orange lead.

Fair Go Round
Thanks to all who supported Fair Go Round. A special thanks to Phoebe and all the wonderful cooks who baked for the cake stall on Sunday. Some great photos of the colours of the day.

A big thanks to Nicolette for all her hard work collecting for Peter Mac. A great collection of $354 on Sunday, with the Camberwell supporters giving so generously. It is not too late to give via the web page here. Donations are tax deductible, and our generous sponsor McKenzie’s matches the donation to Peter Mac with support to Southern United.

Representative Hockey

Under 16 School Sports Australia Championships

Good luck to our five players who are away in Queensland with the SSV Under 16 team – Craig Marais, Billy Hanrahan, Emily Hamilton Smith, Jamie Zimmerman and Josie Lawton.

The girls won their first game against WA 4-3, while the boys went down 1-2 to WA.

Officiating

A big congratulations to life member Jacky Jacob who has achieved her level 2 umpiring certificate, as well as umpiring her first premier league game on Saturday. Great work Jacky.

Premier League Round 15

A big round of hockey it was meant to be, and that it was.

The women’s firsts had a tough game against 8th on the ladder Camberwell, with Camberwell playing a fast game, finishing 3-3, surviving a penalty corner after the whistle. Congratulations to Laura Johnson best on ground for Southern, winning the Fair Go medal.

A huge thanks to the umpires in the men’s game who joined the colour of the day. It was BRILLIANT.

The men’s matches were always going to be tough, the Camberwell machine second second on the ladder in the firsts. The Camberwell firsts took the lead early, leading 2-0 at half time. After the break the Southern men seemed to pick up pace to bring the score line to 2-1. A great goal by Camberwell in the 67th minute took the game out of reach with a 3-1 win to Camberwell.

For the reserves, they held well, with the score 1-1 at half time. But Camberwell fitness showed pushing out to a 4-1 win.

Men & Women’s Pennant Round 15

The round was a bit better for the pennant teams this week.

A busy Saturday at Farm Rd started with the men’s pennant C team, desperate for a better result than last week. With once again PC players moving up to PA, a few good returns to the team of Chris Marr, Nathan Shannahan and Tim Dale, the 4-0 win over Footscray with some great work by the young players Andre, Alfie and Hayden as well as the “less young” showing off their prowess. The result pretty much finalised the final four for pennant C with just the sequence of 2, 3 and 4 still to be decided, with 2, 3 and 4 all on 34 and 33 points.

The pennant B ladies were in full support of the Fair Go round with their rainbow socks, and Powerhouse with rainbow war paint. The Southern team fourth on the ladder took the much wanted three points in a 2-0 win. The ladies are fourth on the ladder, 6 points ahead of fifth, with three rounds to go, Donnie, Brumbies and MUHC.

The pennant E ladies continued the trend of wins at Farm Rd on Saturday with their win over Brumbies, second on the ladder, six over third and nine over fourth.

Of all places to travel to, two of the men’s teams had the worst locations on the weekend, Pennant A to Burra and Pennant D to PEGS. The tyranny of distance defeated the men’s pennant A team. A pretty strong result going down 4-3 against Burra, thanks to Andre doubling up straight from PC. A huge effort.

Men’s pennant E travelled to Brunswick on Sunday, for a much appreciated win – 2-1, with goals to Stewart Fenton and Michael Campbell. This keeps the pennant E boys in sixth position on the ladder, not bad for a team promoted this year.

Men’s pennant D what a tough location to go to when having a tough year, but what a performance they put on, going down 3-1 to PEGS, third on the ladder and twenty points ahead. The pennant D competition has only six points between fifth and ninth. Great work PD at a tough location.

Men & Women’s Metro – Round 15

The 1st versus 2nd clash of the Women’s Met A against St Bedes, was certainly a fizzer with St Bedes forfeiting.

Our metro teams have had a great season, but this weekend did not deliver, although all remain in the four.

Women’s metro B went down to second on the ladder Monash, only their second loss for the season.

Old Haileybury were to strong on Saturday afternoon for Men’s Metro B, great to see you back in goals Ken. While Old Xavier at Koonung on Sunday finsihed 2-1 over the Men’s Metro A with a very depleted Metro A team showing up.

Junior’s Round 12

There are now two more weeks of home and away games for the full field teams, with the last round for the full field teams the 17/18th August. There are up to three rounds of finals for these teams with somewhere between six and eight teams in finals. The half field teams continue their hockey until 8th September.

Junior presentation night will be on Friday 14th September. We would love to see as many people there to celebrate a great year. Details and times to come soon.

The rounds when state teams are away are always a tough round for junior age co-ordinators, this was no different for Tracey as under 16 co-ordinator.

With four out of under 16 shield, with the players heading off to the Gold Coast on the Saturday, and with Nick also out, the 16 shield was glad to have some help from Anthony and Andre from pennant. In a “challenging” game at the hockey centre, the final score was 2-2 against Altona. The 16 shield keep their top spot, and cannot go lower than second over the next two rounds.

The amazing under 16 pennant team travelled to Drouin with only eleven players, and came home with three points from their 3-2 win. Awesome work boys. Worthy minor premiers winning every game so far, and twelve points ahead of second on the ladder.

At Farm Rd, the under 14 girls had a tough game against top of the table Waverley. Next year will be a better year. The Under 16 girls with Puck once again helping beat Footscray, in the 4th (Footscray) versus 5th (Southern) clash. These leaves the 16 girls with an outside chance of a finals berth.

The under 16 derby between the two depleted under 16 teams finished with the red team on top. Red continue their fifth position on the ladder, one point off fourth, with black sixth.

At Brighton the top of the ladder Southern Red team took on 2nd on the ladder St Bedes for a 2-1 win. This gives the under 18 red team an unbeatable minor premiership with two games to go and seven points ahead of second. Black team continue to work hard but just not quite the firepower in a strong under 18 competition.

At Waverley the under 14 pennant team finished a tough game with a 2-2 draw, while the under 14 mixed shield who followed at Waverley have given themselves a good position in the four with a 4-2 win over Waverley. The 14 south team like the 18 black, continue to keep on going, learning every game, but just not quite there to get the points.

On Saturday morning the under 12 boys shield put up a great showing against Hawthorn to finish 4-1down. While the under 12 girls shield continue to hold top spot with a 3-0 win over Burra at the girls round at the hockey centre. The under 12 pennant boys at home played out a strong draw in a 4v5 battle against Mornington.

With some movement in the half field teams, the under 12 boys after a couple of great performances had a tougher round against Bayside, while the under 12 girls had a 3-3 draw with Footscray with Jess, Helena and Rosey scoring. Great to see the young under 10 girls doing well in the under 12 team.

The under 10 boys just went down to Mentone 4-3, while the girls also went down to Mentone.
