Somewhat spurred on by last week’s disappointing late draw against Brunswick, the Men’s State League 2 team set out to make amends with a much needed 3 points against a resilient Old Xavier. After being caught out early by the unanticipated speed of the OXHC wingers, United were quick to reassume authority over the game via our patient and methodically attacking style of play. The inherent pressure paid off, with Michael Pearce snaring an early brace. The punters (even Pearcey himself) were quick to back him in for a hat-trick, however a third goal unfortunately eluded him. Big contributions from Jesse Workman, Josh Ephraums, Mark Tesoriero and invariably some coaching wizardry from Dos (just cemented my spot in the team for next week!) allowed United to take a commanding 5 -1 lead into the sheds at half time.
Determined to maintain our intensity after half time, we continued to systematically deprive OXHC of possession and further gain successful circle penetrations. Everyone made a really positive contribution to the win, with a spread of six players getting on the score sheet. Ultimately our efforts amounted to an 8 – 3 home win, which will consign a significant amount of confidence and momentum into the difficult upcoming fixtures against Powerhouse and Essendon. Many thanks to all of those who came down to support the Southern United teams on Saturday!
