Match Report – Womens Pennant B – Round 11

When Southern played Yarra way back in round 2 the result was a nil all draw. It was the second time that the girls had played together and some still didn’t know each other’s names. This time round it was a totally different team that took the field. The umpire handed out her first green card of the day at the 3 minute mark against Jane O and explained that it would have been a yellow “but it was so early in the game” (geez thanks!).

Yarra was on top early but Southern soon started to get on top with some good play on the forward line between Katelyn and Loz. Jacky came on for a quick cameo, got the ball in the centre of the field, beat a couple of players, passed it off to Loz who flicked it into the back of net. Jacky then went back to the bench to retake up her coaching role. The umpire once again drew attention to herself by sending off a Yarra player and then sending Holly off after her stick got tangled with a Yarra players stick.

Yarra had some concerted attack too but the ever dependable Sue Styles and Alison W repelled all oncomers. It was Sue’s last game before she and Graham go of on their Canadian adventure and once more she showed off her ability to read the game and her skill and ability to direct the players will be missed.

We started to get on top in the 2nd half with Louise T putting in 2 goals from rebounds off short corners. I think that is the first time this year that we have scored off rebounds. Holly got another raised ball in the arm. (that makes it twice in the same arm in 3 games) but the girls continued to pressure Yarra’s defence and 5 minutes before the end of the game Katelyn put the ball into the back of the net. A just reward for the hard work that she, and everyone, had put in throughout the game.

It was great to have such a comprehensive win and the girls really earned it today. The competition is still close and we now sit 5th on the ladder. We need to continue to win to push for a position in the four. If the team keeps working hard at training and improving then I am sure that the rewards will come.
