After last weeks 1-0 win over the unbeaten Footscray the WM3 team was feeling pretty good about themselves as we assembled at Dendy Street to play against the very affable Bayside Cougars – currently 3rd on the ladder. With the sun blazing down on the ground for our 12.30 game we decided that short warm up was in order so as to not run out of steam during the game.
As we lined up to start the game it was mentioned that maybe the teams should swap names due to the fact that most of the Southern team was old enough to be parents of the opposition… And so the game started. It wasn’t long before Bayside was on the scoreboard putting the pressure on SU to come up with an equalizer. As in previous games this season Amanda and Margi showed great composure and cleared away the ball stopping Bayside from adding to their tally. Lisa Holley starred as she too kept a level head and brought the ball down the field to Tess and Hilary giving us opportunities to score. It wasn’t until late in the first half that Hilary was able to break away and take the ball down to score for SU. The first half seemed to go on forever and after some kind words from coach Binksy at half time we headed back out into the sun.
With Bayside having plenty of young fresh legs to sub on and off SU was feeling the pressure – but not Captain Nicolette who after miss hitting a ball broke up with laughter causing half the team to do the same… Well she does say go out and enjoy yourself!!! We quickly snapped back into action and although we were all hot and tired kept cool heads and held onto the ball for most of the game. We didn’t manage to score again but goalie Sue made a couple of great saves keeping the score to a 1 all draw. Well done to all the WM3 ladies!!
