It was the round when there was everything to play for all SUHC senior teams; promotion to Premier League, a place in the final four, avoidance of relegation and of course…pride.
MSL lead the way with what was ultimately a resounding 6-2 away victory over MUHC on Saturday afternoon. SUHC was quick out the blocks and should have been couple of goals up within the first 5 minutes of the game but it was the Shoppers who scored first from a penalty corner after their first foray into our defensive circle. MUHC scored again minutes later but this was disallowed following an intervention from the uninvolved umpire who had spotted an MUHC foul well before the goal was scored. Nice to see sensible, co-operative umpiring!! This spurred our boys on who then scored four unanswered goals in what was in the end a fairly dominant display. And then came the wait as our promotion fortunes hinged on the Albury versus Essendon result in Albury. Tension was high at the Price Alfred Hotel afterwards as the progressive scores from Albury were texted in. In the end it was Essendon 4, Albury 2 and second place on the ladder was ours. SUHC’s promotion to the Premier League in 2013 is now certain unless the premiership is won by someone else other than SUHC or Essendon. So now the finals beckon with MSL playing Essendon for a berth in the grand final on Sunday 2nd September at 1.45 pm at the SNHC.
WSL played top team Hawthorn in an away game in which the result was largely about goal difference and how other teams went. WSL started brightly enough and lead by a goal at the 15 minute mark. Then Hawthorn seized the initiative and by half time led 4-1. The Lady Hawks applied more pressure in the second half and overran our girls completely to win 12-3. Meanwhile and elsewhere, Kew drew with Yarra and Albury drew with Powerhouse, so despite this rather ignominious defeat, SUHC retained 4th spot on the ladder and with it that coveted finals berth. WSL play Albury for a spot in the preliminary final on Sunday 2nd September at 10.15am at the SNHC at the SNHC.
MPA played top team Waverley at the SNHC on Sunday and had to win to stay in the four and final’s contention. SUHC led early in a high standard game but could not contain the powerful Waverley outfit and were defeated 2-4 in the end. While it was disappointing for SUHC’s MPA to have missed the finals, this young and relatively inexperienced team has performed well above all expectations this year and should be very proud of the results they have achieved. Well done MPA!!
WPB drew 1 all with Mentone and finished 8th.
MPD beat Greensborough 4-1 to finish 3rd on the ladder and play MUHC for a spot in the preliminary final on Saturday 1st September at 5.15pm at Monash University. Well done boys!!
WPC were beaten 0-2 by MUHC and finished 9th.
MPE beat Camberwell 3-2 to finish a well clear 2nd on the ladder. MPE play Footscray for a spot in the preliminary final on Saturday 1st September at 3.30pm at Monash University. Well done boys!!
MMSE1 were beaten 3-6 by Mornington and finished 8th on the ladder.
MM2S were beaten 1-9 by Dandenong Warriors and finished 6th.
WM2S thumped Mornington 9-0 (see Lex’s extensive report of this game in News) and have consolidated 2nd spot on the ladder. WM2S play ECHO for a spot in the Grand Final on Saturday 1st September at 3.30pm at Waverley. Very well done ladies!!
MM3S were defeated by St Bedes 1-3 and finished 5th.
WM3SE were beaten by MCC 1-0 and finished 7th.
MM4S beat HMAS Cerberus 2-0 and finished 7th.
Thanks to all SUHC teams for the effort they have put in for the 2013 season.
Congratulations and best of luck to those 5 teams who have made the finals and I urge all members to go along to the finals games this week and support your team mates as they endeavour to bring some premiership glory to your club.
