This match against Mentone, probably more than any other for the SUHC, would have a significant bearing on the season. They were to play the team below them on the ladder. Interestingly, Mentone, in the previous round had defeated Footscray, a team which beat our lads fairly convincingly only three weeks ago.
The importance of this game was not lost on the Strikers as they jumped out of the blocks to be 2-0 up in a matter of minutes. However, Mentone were not about to give in easily and struck back with a goal to make it 2-1. It was most unusual to see the first three forays into the circle, SUHC twice and Mentone once, result in shots from which goals were scored.
Although Mentone were chasing most of the time, there were passages of play which could have made for a different result. At one time, the score was 4-4. This pressure was evident in the last few minutes of the match when Mentone had the ball in an attacking zone and forced a couple of penalty corners. Fortunately, the defence was able to parry these thrusts and they did not result in a score.
Score: SUHC 6 defeated Mentone 4.
