Mens Premier League – R11 Match Report v Camberwell

A rousing pre-match talk by Southern Captain Mark Tesoriero inspired the team to a 1-1 draw with competition frontrunners Camberwell on Saturday.

After being humbled 9 goals to 1 in their previous meeting, an improved defensive showing was necessary and ultimately provided by the team.

Camberwell dominated early and went to a one goal lead when a defensive turnover and poor marking allowed them an easy entry into the circle. From there though, it was an evenly contested game with both teams attacking forays being curtailed by hard tackling defence.

A Matt L’Huillier drag flick tied the scores midway through the 2nd half and set the scene for an intriguing end to the game. Camberwell pushed one shot wide from close range and had another series of shots saved brilliantly by Southern’s ‘keeper David Hammond, while at the other end Rowan Yeo was unlucky not to have one of his damaging runs rewarded with a penalty stroke.

A penalty corner awarded to Southern with only minutes to go would be the final scoring opportunity of the game. L’Huillier’s powerful shot was saved on the line by defender Will Unkles, denying the Southern boys what would have been a fairytale end to a remarkable game.
