An important weeks for the mens and womens firsts. The men played away at Essendon with the bookies odds against them (11th vs 3rd) but with the team making the most of their opportunities came away with a 2-1 win. Also, this weekend saw Hockey Victoria’s “Fair Go Sport!” round take place with clubs increasing awareness of sexual and gender diversity in hockey. Thankyou to Essendon Hockey Club for hosting SUHC.
Perhaps most importantly, these three points put Southern into 10th (equal points with Footscray and MCC), 16 points ahead of Mentone with only 5 rounds (incl a double header) left to play. A solid position to be in.
The women travelled to Geelong searching for hard to get points to keep in touch with the top of the ladder. It was a very physical grind of a game that ended up in a 2-0 loss that did not give credence to the excellent hockey played by Southern. With Albury, Kew and Yarra Valley all drawing, those elusive 1st and 2nd spots are still up for grabs.
