Match Report – Round 20 – Mens Premier League vs Mentone

In the final game of a long season it was always going to be important that the Strikers finished off with a win. In the early stages, the match was very even in terms possession and control of territory. Mid-way through the first half, Mentone got a break with a field goal and the chase was on. The Strikers lifted their tempo but still went to the break with a 1-0 deficit.

At the five minute mark of the second half, Rob Graham levelled the score with a well-taken PC conversion. The relentless pressure yielded another goal not long after, when Rowan Yeo converted a Penalty Corner (his 15th goal of the season) to put the Strikers into the lead. By now, the home side had taken control and pushed deeper into attack. Mark Scully confirmed the result with a field goal in the twenty third minute. It was a win as expected, but Mentone had made life difficult until the Striker’s superior fitness and overall skill told in the end. It was a fitting end to a successful season which saw the Strikers hold their place in the VPL competition for season 2014.
