Vale Phylis Howe

Valé – Phylis Howe (1919? – 03.01.14)

Phylis Howe, the mother of past player and coach Phil Howe, passed away on 3 January aged about 95 years. The Cheltenham based Howe family was involved with the Cheltenham and later Moorabbin Hockey Clubs.

Gwen Learey says:  “If my memory serves me correctly Phil started his hockey career with Cheltenham and later Moorabbin, as a junior. He then played in senior teams eventually being a valued member of the A grade side. He left Moorabbin for a while to play with other clubs (St Kilda and TEM, from memory), then came back to coach and play in the SL1 team in about 1979. Later, he also coached the women’s senior team.  I believe he also played in the veteran’s team for a short while.”

The club sends condolences to Phil and his family, including Matthew Howe, Phil’s son, who is a long standing member of the Mentone HC and was a highly rated senior umpire.
