United players tapped for new competition

Excitement is growing among hockey supporters with the coaches and teams for the new Hockey One national competition being announced. Hockey One represents a major shift for hockey in Australia with a new domestic hockey league being played around the country. Seventeen-year-old Southern United pair Amy Lawton and Craig Marais, together with Brad Marais, Josh Mulder and Nathan Ephraums, are in the squad for HC Melbourne, the Melbourne team in the new league.

Lawton in development squad call-up

The stellar year continues for elite players at Southern United. Amy Lawton, who as a member of the U21 Australian squad was selected in the Australian Hockeyroos team for the game against New Zealand in April, is one step closer to becoming a full member of the Hockeyroos. She was selected to be part of the Australian development Squad, joining United clubmate Nathan Ephraums at the same level.

With 19 games of hockey, together with training for the Southern Metro Sharks representative team, the Southern United Hockey Club home pitch at Kingston Heath Reserve was at capacity on the weekend. The juniors, playing Friday night and Saturday morning, and the men’s section took centre stage on Saturday afternoon, with the women on Sunday. On Friday night the Under 16 mixed shield and pennant teams continued their strong starts, and Under 14 girls pennant continued their push for the top-four with a 2-0 win over top-of-theladder Bayside, with Amika Linstrom and Eve Dartnell scoring the two goals.

What a weekend for our senior teams. Our top four men's teams all in the top four, with premier league on top of the ladder. 11 wins and a draw for our senior teams. Our junior girls doing well, with 12 pennant and 10 girls first win, a win against top team for 14 girls pennant, under 14 and 12 shield with a draw.
