Round 10 Seniors – Round 8 Juniors Wrap

What a weekend!
Premier League Round 10

There are no words to describe it. With the sixteen team structure, eight teams go in to the finals, but as we all know “being in the four” sounds just so much better. The incredible women’s premier league have been in the four for the past few weeks, but after a great day at Farm Rd, both women and men premier league teams are fourth on the ladder – noting that the Southern and Waverley teams have played one less game.

The juniors of our club that have progressed to the top senior ranks show yet again the power of our premier league, with the young juniors shining through in the men and women’s teams.

The women’s reserves first on the card, Southern reserves fifth on the ladder and MCC fourteenth, the result of the game reflected the ladder positions with the Southern reserves 5-0, with two goals to Shan and Ash, and one to Molly – a true example of our mixed age team, with all three product of our junior program, while Dom was in the net at the other end, great work for an under 14 goal keeper. The women’s firsts. Once again the great position on ladder of the Southern team – fourth, was evident in their match against ninth place MCC with a 5-1 win, with two goals to Amy and Nicole Graham and one to Charley. Great work ladies.

The men’s premier league were sixth on the ladder, while MCC has had a better start to the season and third, but only 3 points separated the two. The game result was not in doubt after a strong run in the second – half 4-0 win, with two goals to Craig, and one to Brad and Matt.

The MCC men’s reserves are clearly top of the table with nine wins, one loss and one draw. When MCC was 3-0 up it looked like the game was over, but the reserves were not going to let it go that easily. With minutes to go the reserves clawed the score back to 4-4, for MCC to only take the points in the last minute with another goal.

To sum up the day we will quote life member and long term supporter Richard Blazé “Not only are the ladder positions reflecting the rise in fortunes of both WPL and MPL, but the sheer enjoyment of seeing several world class performers on our home pitch is a very new thing for long term followers of our club. Long may it continue!

Canteen / BBQ Duty

A shout out to all those that are doing their duty in the canteen. The canteen is the hub of the club providing food and drink but also that club feel. Canteen/BBQ duty is also a great way to get to know people in the club, and have some fun as well. Suzie, for all your hard work in the background, thank you. Please share your canteen duty photos with us. The more the merrier. Senior canteen duty on Saturday is Men’s Metro B.

Men & Women’s Pennant Round 10

Men’s pennant D had the horror time slot. Who thinks a 6.30pm game on a Saturday night is reasonable? And what is worse than a 6.30pm game on Saturday? A game at Casey at 6.30pm. Despite the horror time the team achieved the result they wanted and needed, a win, 8-0. Congratulations guys.Eleven of men’s pennant E took their packed lunch to make the trek to Greensborough. With the bare minimum the team came away with a 1-1 draw.

In the afternoon of MCC hockey on Sunday at Farm Rd, the men’s pennnant A had a tough game against top of the ladder MCC, finishing 2-0 down. The men’s pennant C team had a better run against the lower ranked MCC pennant C team winning 4-0 with Jesse Workmen and Jono Boyd scoring two apiece.

Packo and Jono supervising?

Women’s pennant B also were part of the MCC hockey round at Farm Rd on Sunday, the ladies third on the ladder had most of the play against the lower ranked MCC and finished 1-0 up. While the women’s pennant E team also took the points against PEGS.

Men & Women’s Metro – Round 10

Men’s metro B also had a horror Saturday 6.30pm game. Great to see Nick and Kurtis Langeder taking to the men’s pitch, for Nick’s first senior game, and Kurtis’s second. Soon Greg will have his whole under 16 team out there, we hope.

Women’s metro B were the first game on Sunday at Farm Rd, where there was a full day of hockey. They set the scene well with a 1-0 win over Monash in the top of the table clash. While Women’s metro A travelled to Monash for their game against Collegians. Nice to see Evie put on the goalie kit to help the team out for their 8-1 win, with most of the damage done by the youngsters with Ilé scoring three and Ruby Jansz two.

Men’s metro A on Sunday continued their success with a 5-3 win over St Bedes, with Hayden Jones scoring three.

Junior’s Round 8

At Farm Rd, once again the under 14 south started the evening. This team coached by the super coach Warren and with great support from many parents are showing us all what hockey is about, having fun, playing a great game with friends. Keep on going team. The u14 shield girls played a strong game against Donnie, the girls had their chances and the score could easily have been closer going down 3-1. The under 16 shield girls played Waverley. The Waverley girls have had a great season so far, but the under 16 girls put up a massive fight, with help from Puck in the second half, to draw 1-1. Great work girls. Last on at Farm Rd on Friday night, the Under 16 red team took on Knox. Thanks to Cameron, Luke, Alex and Lucas helping out for their huge 8-0 win over Knox.

In a round of interesting results in the under 16 south, the black team took on the untouchable St Bedes Blue, 7 matches, 7 wins, 8 points ahead of second on the ladder and they DREW. Brilliant work team and Greg, thanks for helping out Anthony.

The 14 and 16 mixed shield struggled with the traffic nightmare to get to Essendon. The teams managed to get there, just. The 14 mixed shield were first on, and in another very low scoring game went down 1-0 with Essendon scoring late in the second half. The change to the competition structure this year with Shield A and Shield B does seem to have made the shield competition more even with very little separating the eight teams. The 16 mixed shield had much of the play but struggled on the conversion, in the end winning 2-1.

At Mentone 14 mixed pennant after a good start finished in a very close match 3-2 down, with Ashton scoring both goals. Thanks Isaac for putting on the goalie kit at half time when Ollie was unwell. You did a great job.

The under 12 girls shield suffered their first loss for the season against Donnie, going down 3-1. Their strong start to the season sees them still on top of the ladder. The under 12 boys shield had a strong 5-1 win against Waverley, great work boys on keeping on going in a tough season. While the under 12 boys pennant team went down to Mentone.

The under 12 district competition in 2018 is a half field competition, similar to the under 10 half field. This year they are run as term competitions, with the weekend being the last week of term 2, and the term 3 competition starting 21st July.

The biggest news of the junior weekend happened on Sunday when our under 12 boys district team had a win against Maccabi. Amazing work team, thanks Amy for your hard work and a big thanks to Chris for taking over the team. Congratulations to all.

The under 12 girls district finished on a bit of a down with missing players and forfeiting their match. They have had a strong season and finish at the top of the ladder for the competition.

The under 10 girls has also had a great season under the great care of Jem with a nice win over Mentone, while the under 10 boys strengthened each week, going down to Mentone on the weekend.

The new school term will start the new competition for the half field teams.

The under 10 quarter field teams which play each week on a Saturday morning against Bayside and Mentone have also finished for the season, with their next games also on 21st July.
