Fair Go Round

Round 15 of senior hockey and round 12 of junior hockey is “Fair Go, Sport”.

Supporting the Fair Go Round shows our commitment to creating a sporting club that is safe, supportive and inclusive for all players regardless of their sexuality, race or gender identity.

To make the most of this round, and to show support for this initiative we ask our members to join in and show their support. Some ideas in how you can do that:

  • Wear a colourful outfit to training this week, and of course send us a photo of your team to share.
  • On the 5th of August the Women and Men Premier League teams play Camberwell at Farm Rd (1.30 pm women, 3.30 pm men). The teams will be supporting Fair Go by wearing rainbow socks.
  • Come and watch some great hockey and show your support for Fair Go by wearing a colourful outfit.

CAKE STALL

As part of our support for Fair Go we will be running a cake stall. We ask for donations of cakes / slices with colourful / rainbow icing. The baked goods will need to be dropped off on Sunday 5th of August at Farm Rd at noon. Please provide a list of ingredients used in your cake.

Our Dogs

Of course, your dog next weekend can also support Fair Go. Colourful ribbons, coat or even collar.

Silent Auction & Comedy Night

Firstly a huge thanks to the fundraising and social committee for all the work they have done on the silent auction and the comedy night. The work you put in can seem pretty thankless, but we can tell you, it is truly appreciated.

Thanks to all those who donated to the silent auction and who bid. A wonderful $3,000 was raised from the auction.

The comedy night was a great success, with all saying that the four comedians were brilliant. From those of us who couldn’t make it, especially those in the cold being beaten by Essendon, hopefully we can make it next year.

Australian Junior Squad

Well the news doesn’t get much better than this.

Southern United has two players this year who have been selected in the Australian Junior Squad. This is the second year Nathan Ephraums has been part of the squad, and this year Amy Lawton has been selected in the women’s squad. The Australian Junior squad is selected based on performance, amongst other things, at the Under 21 Australian Championships. The selection of a sixteen year old is very newsworthy, and in fact mentioned in the Hockey Australia release In the Women’s National Junior Squad, Amy Lawton and Jolie Sertorio are included despite both being just 16 years young with the selectors excited about their potential

Nathan Ephraums has also been selected in the Australian Burra team to play in the Sultan of Johor Cup in Malaysia later in the year.

A huge congratulations to Nathan and Amy.

Master’s World Cup

The 40+ Australian teams with David Hammond and Sally Evans have started the tournament well. The 40+ men started with a 7-0 win over USA and a tougher 4-3 win over South Africa. The women had a 6-0 win over South Africa to start the tournament, followed by a 2-0 win over host nation Spain.

Officiating

A shout out to our umpires who make the game happen.

Great to see Charlie and Aiden umpiring the Under 12 shield Camberwell game together on Saturday.

Also thanks to Jack Marquardt for hanging around at Essendon to umpire the graveyard shift.

Premier League Round 14

A big weekend at Mentone with our premier league teams playing key games near the pointy end of the season. Men’s reserves set the right tone for the day with a good 5-0 win over Mentone with two goals to Michael Pearce, Cam Paice and Craig Hardham, keeping their fifth on the ladder.

Men’s premier league followed, a nice 3-0 up at half time, but we could not capitalise, two goals in the last two minutes from Mentone game us the three points, in a closer result than wanted. Southern remains third on the ladder, with Powerhouse fourth three points behind.

What a game for the women’s premier league. Mentone three points ahead, and a significant higher score difference, but Southern with one less game played. It was going to be a showdown, and that is what it was. The game 3-3 at half time, a goal from Amy early in the second half, put us ahead, and that is the way it remained for the game, 4-3 win. A great result. That leaves the women fourth on the ladder, equal points to third, one point behind second, and four behind first. The Southern women play Waverly (15th on the ladder) on Tuesday night for their catch up game.

The women’s reserves had a tougher game, a 1-1 result, keeping 5th on the ladder, with the catch up game on Tuesday.

Men & Women’s Pennant Round 14

Women’s pennant E continue their winning form with a 6-0 win over Footscray, with a massive four goals to Carien Boshoff. The ladies are a very clear second on the ladder.

The remainder of the pennant teams would prefer to simply say, the weekend has been and gone, let’s move on. Tempting as it is to do that, we won’t.

The women’s pennant B started the very long afternoon at Essendon with their 12.30 game. A 1-0 result for Essendon was the best result for Southern for the day at Essendon.

Second on the list at Esseondon was the men’s pennant A team which dropped to eleven players at a blink of an eye, with four doubling up from pennant C. Round 5 had seen the match up be a very tight, heated game, with Southern winning 5-3, Essendon were not allowing it to happen again. Southern, like last week, had an inordinate number of shots on goals, but finding the net was challenging, Essendon fast and accurate took the game 7-2.

Last at Essendon were the men’s pennant C. Essendon suffered their first loss last week. With an impressive goal difference of 55, another loss was not going to happen, when they had the support of their home turf. This game it was Essendon with the significant numbers of short corners and shots on goals, with their superior speed, taking the points 6-1. The pennant C remain third on the ladder.

The remainder men’s pennant teams played at Farm Rd on Saturday. At tough game for men’s pennant E going down 2-6 to Altona with two goals to Stewart Fenton, while pennant D went down to MCC.

Men & Women’s Metro – Round 14

Another good round for our metro teams.

Women’s metro A had a score difference building round with a 6-0 win over Old Xavs, claiming back second position on the ladder over Mentone on score difference. Ilé de Vos scoring three, and Ruby Jansz two.

Women’s metro B with four rounds to go have now guaranteed their minor premiership with a 2-0 win over Dandenong, now 13 points ahead of second on the ladder. Congratulations.

Men’s metro A finished in a 1-1 draw with Monash, with other results on the weekend, the metro A are now second on the ladder. With a tougher run to the end than Bayside, some hard work required to keep the second spot.

Men’s metro B went down 2-1 to Mentone, keeping their third position on the ladder.

Junior’s Round 11

Another round of great results for some of the junior teams, with a large number of teams playing Camberwell.

At Farm Rd on Friday night, the evening started with the Under 14 pennant team. After a great win against Mornington last week, the team had momentum. This week playing Bayside, at half time the game was even. The coaches – Bridie, Charley and Georgia, must have said some magic words to the boys and they came out firing taking the game to a 5-1 win, with a hat trick to Ashton Williams. The 14 pennant are guaranteed a spot in the finals now, third on the ladder and nine points ahead of fourth place Bayside, with three games to go.

Under 14 mixed shield was up against Camberwell. A great game of hockey, with neither team able to score, finishing with the shield’s team fourth draw for the season, keeping their third position on the ladder.
Under 16 mixed shield also up against Camberwell guaranteed their spot in the top two with a 4-0 win. Two great goals from Josie.

Last of the night was the Under 18 red team, top of the ladder against Mentone’s team second on the ladder. A tough game, with the Southern crew finishing 2-1 up over Mentone with Southern scoring the two goals in the last minutes of the game. The 18 red team now seven points ahead of second and third on the ladder.

The Friday night girls teams worked together on Friday night. The 14 girls finished a tough game against Camberwell, and three girls Puck, Brylee and Ellen then rushed to the hockey centre to play the second half of the 16 girls game. The 16 girls finished 2-1 down against second on the ladder TEM, a pretty good result with a team short of players for the first half.

At Dendy St the 16 black team started the night in a tough game against Bayside where Bayside were just too strong. Next on the agenda was the top of the ladder 16 pennant against Waverley. A 4-0 win guaranteeing Southern the minor premiership. Great work guys.

The under 16 read team playing short, a 1-1 draw with St Bedes. The two 16 south teams remain fifth and sixth on the ladder of ten teams, a great result so far. While the under 18 black team had a tough game against St Bedes. The incredible under 14 south team also had a very tough game against Dandenong. Danny in goals must be congratulated on his game in very trying circumstances.

Saturday morning was exciting most for the growth we have seen in the quarter field players and the half field teams over the year.

The under 12 boys district team have really hit their straps now with a 5-1 win over Mentone, undefeated this season. Welcome to Southern Will.

The under 10 boys also had a strong 3-0 win, for them over Waverley. The team is growing in confidence every week. Great work by Keiran two goals, and a great fight at either end of the pitch.

The under 10 girls also improving each week a 2-2 draw against Mentone.

At Camberwell the under 12 pennant boys had a pleasing 2-1 win, while the under 12 shield girls finished with a 1-1 draw. The girls remain on the top of the ladder by 3 points.

At Farm Rd on Saturday morning the Camberwell might was too much for our under 12 shield boys. With six junior games against Camberwell for the weekend, two wins, two draws and two losses.
