Men’s Health week 11-17 Jue
This week was the week of men’s health week. Below is the message that was shared by our club president Caitlin on social media.
In Australia, Men’s Health Week provides a platform for challenging and debating key issues in men’s health and to raise the profile of men, their health outcomes and health needs around the country each June.
It celebrates the strengths of men, the contributions they make and the important role they play in society. It is a week of celebration and engagement of men with a serving of health on the side!
Men’s Health Week has a direct focus on the health impacts of men’s and boys’ environments. It serves to ask two questions:
– What factors in men’s and boy’s environments contribute to the status of male health?
– How can we turn that around and create positive environments in men’s and boy’s lives?
This week, SUHC encourage you to make a special effort to talk to your friends, family and teammates about issues in men’s health, explore the different ways families support the health and well-being of men and boys, and the positive contributions men make to their families.
To raise awareness, we encourage players and supporters to wear a splash of blue whilst supporting any matches this round.
There are many services available for those who need extra resources, such as beyondbule and RUOK. MensLine Australia offers telephone and online counselling service for men as well as a range of handy tips, tools and resources.
Finally, we’d like use this opportunity to thank all the men and boys who contribute towards and make SUHC a great club to be a part of – thank you!

New Junior Section Secretary
As per the announcement on Facebook during the week,.
A huge thank you to Anna Jennings who after 6 1/2 years being our Junior Secretary has handed over the baton to Tina Papadopoulos. Tina has 2 boys in the junior section, George who is playing in U12’s (and U14’s) and Anthony in U16’s. A big thank you to Tina as well for taking on board this important role. Tina can be contacted on junior.secretary@suhc.com.au. Anna, who has done an amazing job in this pivotal role in the junior section, is not lost to the club administration as she is continuing on her role as Club Secretary.
Youth Olympic Games Trials
Following the success of the Australian teams in PNG in May, which included our Amy Lawton and Brad Marais, Australia will be sending a women’s and men’s team to the Youth Olympic Games in Bounes Aires in October. Trials for the teams were held during the week in which three Southern players were selected to trial: Amy Lawton, Brad Marais and Craig Marais. Only fifteen field players were selected to trial, a great achievement to be included in the trial. We all excitedly await the results of the trials.
Our Dogs
Our dogs continue to feature in our wrap, this photo was featured on social media a few weeks back, but not all would have seen it. The photo is too good not to share with all. |

Premier League Round 9 Match 11 |
|
Playing at the hockey centre on a cold wet day, just perfect for players and supporters.
The day did not start well with, the men’s reserves playing a close match where Melbourne Uni managed to get the ball in the net, and we didn’t. Sadly a 2-0 loss, and a hospital stay for Boomer, we hope the recovery goes quickly.
After that the tables turned. The men firsts were next on the billing. MUHC third on the ladder, have had a great start to the season. Score 1-1 at half time. In the second half, with a second goal from Craig and one to Ben, the men took the points from the Uni with a 3-2 win. No photos of the premier league games this week, but the combined Nathan / Craig goal is on video here it is a piece of magic hockey. Well worth the watch.
The women’s firsts game was a very different game, MUHC at the bottom of the ladder. When a team is fighting off relegation, anything can happen, but not on Saturday. Only 1-0 up at half time, the second half saw a goal fest with the ladies winning 4-0 with goals shared between Tas, Liv Downes, LJ, and Georgia. The women reserves also had a strong win 5-2, hat trick to Nicole Graham and goals to youngsters Molly O’Neill and Jasmine Singh. |

Men & Women’s Pennant Round 9 |
|
The three top pennant teams also met with Melbourne Uni with the location of Farm Rd, a clean sweep for our teams,
Men’s pennant C started the afternoon with a 3v4 battle, with both teams on equal points, and Southern ahead on goal difference. The physical game had all on edge of their seats, finishing with a close 2-1 result with goals to Liam Eddington and Paul Layzell.
The women’s pennant B game followed, also a 3v4 clash, with Southern one point ahead on the ladder. The Southern ladies were clearly too strong 3-0, with two goals to Maddy Ryder.
Last on the billing was men’s pennant A. A mixed season for the boys, winning against the top teams and struggling with others, playing bottom of the ladder Melbourne Uni was not necessary a slam dunk. But the team showed what they can do, with a 6-0 win, Cam Paice scoring a hat trick. A great afternoon of pennant hockey at home.
Men’s Pennant D trekked to Yarra in the cold and wet for a challenging game. Nick Moran, received a stick to the face, we hope all is going well, and the team went down 5-1.
SNHC was the location for all Men’s pennant E with Southern up against second on the ladder Melbourne High. A close game, with MHSOB just proving too strong on the day in the 5-4 result with Stewart Fenton scoring two. A shout out to Lachie Eddington for his umpiring, it is great when acknowledged externally for doing such a great job.
The women’s pennant E team on Sunday played MCC at Farm Rd, the Southern girls 3rd on the ladder and MCC a clear last. The game reflected this with a 6-0 result, with an amazing five goal scorers for our team. |

Men & Women’s Metro – Round 9 |
|
</t
The super metro season continues. Men’s metro A scored a massive 11 goals in their game against Dandenong. Jason Bloms scoring four, Josh Madden three and Liam Lewis scored two. First seniors game for under 18 player Matt Allen, welcome to the senior ranks.
The women’s metro B had the late shift at Dandenong 6.30pm and the time defeated them, no surprise there, going down 1-0. The met B ladies remain clearly on top of the ladder.
Women’s metro A played in the cold at Farm Rd on Sunday and finished with a good result, 1 all draw against top of the ladder Mentone, with Ruby Jansz the goal scorer. The draw is enough to keep the third place on the ladder. Thanks to Simone who played yet again as double up goal keeper. We continue to look for a goal keeper for this team, we would love to hear from anyone wanting to take on this role in the amazing supportive group of ladies.
Men’s metro B late on Sunday at Bayside continued their winning season with a 4-2 win keeping their top spot on the ladder with John Leighton clearing showing he can score goals as well as stop goals, scoring a hat trick. Congratulations Luka Duggan from under 18s and Alex Hallson from 16s on your first senior game. |

A very cold night for those that were out in it, we won’t talk about the noticeable absent supporters.
The under 14 and 16mixed pennant teams had a great night at Brighton with both recording strong wins. The under 14 pennant boys took the points with a 4-3 win over Waverley, with MIchael Green scoring two, and one to Ashton Williams and Bryn Sandars. The 16 pennant boys continue to take the opposition by storm with a 4-0 win over Gippsland. With half the season now completed the 16 pennant team are undefeated and eight points ahead of second on the ladder – WOW.
At Farm Rd the 14 south started the night. The group, half girls, although not getting results on the board are improving every week, and showing how support from the amazing Warren as coach can make the difference. The 14 mixed shield were next on. There game against promoted Geelong proved to be another very frustrating nil all draw, their third draw for the season. The 14mixed shield competition is incredibly tight with Altona dropping out in round four and Geelong joining. The draw will leave Southern second on the equalised ladder with 12 points, where the top team Geelong is on 12.25 points and the eighth team on 7 points, what a close competition. The last seven rounds will be a tight battle.
The under 16 south derby finished with a fitting draw. The under 18s suffered from a Caulfield Grammar event, with 8 players unavailable. Some switching around of players in teams and help from under 16s, thanks Anthony Papadopoulos, Alex Hallson, Daniel Pardo and Ben Hewitt for helping out the black team to a close 2-0 loss. The red team suffered their first loss with the player switches and only nine players. The red team do retain their top spot on the ladder.
Away from home, the shield girls played at Footscray, with the 14 girls taking the stage first against top of the ladder Footscray. Some clubs have girls only playing in girls competitions in all age groups, not just 12s, this is shown in the strength of these club’s girls teams, with the girls going down to Footscray. The 16 girls played an amazing game, with Puck doubling up to give them a bench and finished 1-1, a great result, with Ile scoring the goal.
At the cold and wet Yarra the mixed shield teams have had challenging results over the last few years, but superstitions did not get the best of the Southern team, with 16 mixed shield taking the points in the 4-2 win, with a hat trick to Emily Hamilton Smith, and a classic Davin goal, the fourth goal.
The stars of Saturday morning no doubt were the under 12 boys half field playing Mentone. Early in the season they were beaten 10-0, on Saturday the result was a 2-2 draw with goals to Josh Healy and Benji Matthew. What a turn around, awesome work boys, and Amy.
Saturday morning started early and cold with the under 10 quarter field not only playing but then first off the rank for club photos. The under 10 half field followed with both teams showing lots of grit but going down to Waverley.
The under 12 half field followed, with the boys showing their massive improvement against Mentone, and the girls once again showing their prowess against Brunswick black winning 3-2. Last for the morning at Farm Rd was our under 12 boys pennant team, so young, they had a tough season last year, and now coming to age – many are still under 10, this year. Great for them to get a win against Bayside 1-0.
Away from home the unbeaten under 12 girls shield showed their style in a tight match at Waverley taking the points 1-0, with Lulu scoring the one goal. The girls team got in to the spirit of men’s round with their team photo.
The very young under 12 boys shield team showed great strength against fourth on the ladder Essendon, 1-0 at half time and then no score from either team in the second half, a 1-0 loss, so close boys. |
