Southern United Hockey Club

Round 18 Seniors, First finals Juniors

What’s on at Southern?

Finals at Farm Rd.

We expect to have three finals games at Farm Rd on Saturday – Women’s Metro A, Women’s Metro B and Men’s Metro A. Come down and support our teams. The canteen is a great place to watch from. If you are able to help in the canteen for an hour or two on Saturday afternoon please let Suzie know via sueandgraham1@bigpond.com

More than a dog photo

They say a picture tells a thousand words. And this picture says it all.

Buckley, the dog that certainly has the most hours at the club each year, and possibly the most loved and petted by all who visit Farm Rd. He has featured in our dog photos earlier in the year with Taine Workman, but this says even more. Of course Buckley’s bosses spend even more hours at the club, how would we survive without the hours of tireless work of Suzie, and Graham.

Then the picture has some of “our girls”. The women’s section and girl juniors have had a stellar season, and our young girls coming through the club have made this happen. These 13-15 yo girls really had something to celebrate on the weekend:

  • Josie: The youngest of the crew, only 13, a member of our premier league squad, who finished second on the ladder, member of the 16 mixed shield who finished minor premiers and are through to the grand final with a magnificent 5-1 win on Friday night. Josie was also selected as shadow for the U16 School Sports Australia team to travel Europe next year.
  • Anna, Molly & Dom: All in our women’s reserves team. The reserves had a good win on Saturday and through to the top eight finals. They are also part of the under 16 girls shield team who have finished the season with aplomb. The girls won their final against Waverley on Friday and now through to the preliminary against Essendon. We cannot forget Anna and Molly were in Women’s Met A last year, playing with their mothers Deb and Jane. Deb as treasurer of our club now, and also puts her hand to help with everything else and Jane who took on the thankless task of umpire co-ordinator for Juniors.
  • Shauna: New to the club this year, and aren’t we pleased to have her. Shauna has played reserves this year, with some premier league games, and a member of our Under 14 mixed shield team who are now through to the preliminary final after their win over Geelong on the weekend.

What a photo, what a group.

Representative Hockey

And the representative hockey news just keeps on coming.

Congratulations to Puck Okhuizen (13 Venom), Indra Stubbs and Lulu Stansby (13 Volt) and Ashton Williams and Max Hoult (13 Volt) in their selection in the under 13 state teams to play in Tasmania in October. Great to see two Southern goalies in the state teams again, a credit to our wonderful goalie coaches. First state team for Indra and Max.

Officiating

Our umpires were out and about for the junior finals, with Jack Marquardt and Charlie Williams umpiring the under 12 pennant final.

Premier League Round 18

It was a lovely sunny day at Farm Rd for the last round of premier league on Saturday. As we all know we should be sun aware, and life member Richard Blaze found his way of keeping in the shade.

Now the results.

The game for both premier league women and men, were not going to affect their place on the ladder once Powerhouse drew with Footscray in their men’s game. Although the result did not affect the ladder, it is great to go in to the finals with a win against Altona – especially for the men where Altona was fighting for a finals place. Altona had saved their women’s premier league team from relegation last weekend with their win over Yarra, so had less at stake on Saturday.

Our women’s reserves started the day well with a 3-0 win over Altona, with two goals to Ash Jones, giving her 21 for the season, and the highest goal scorer in women’s premier league reserves. Awesome work Ash. The women’s reserves finish fifth on the ladder, equal points and 1 goal ahead in goal difference of Camberwell.

The women’s premier league with 2nd on the ladder safe, finished the season with a 4-2 win, with the goals shared around.

By the start of the men’s premier league game, the men had their third position on the ladder safe, but Altona knew they had to win to have a place in the finals, and fought hard they did. Altona managed to find many penalty corners, a chance to give their drag flick specialist a go, but our team held strong defending, with one Goldie drag flick finding its mark at the 44th minute to tie the match. Fighting back, a field goal by Nathan at the 60th minute put us in front, a lead we held until the end of the match. A great finish.

The Altona men’s reserves have been the star of the season coming in to the final round with fourth on the ladder and wanting to get a third to not face Camberwell in the first final. They proved too strong for our reserves, Southern going down 3-7.

And on to finals we go.

Confused regarding the premier league final structure. Don’t despair, we lay it all out for you.

The women’s firsts finished second on the ladder, now face Mentone in the first qualifying final. The finals for women’s premier league (click on image for larger image). The ladies have played Mentone once this year for a 5-4 win.

The men’s first play in the 2v3 final against Doncaster, after Camberwell pipped them off top spot on Sunday. The one match between Southern and Donnie this year in a 3-3 draw.

In the men’s reserves Southern 8th on the ladder will play Greensborough . The sequence for their finals can be seen here, the women’s reserves 5th on the ladder will play Doncaster and their finals sequence is here.

Men & Women’s Pennant Round 18

Last round of pennant, and it was not clear sailing for all.

The men’s pennant C wanted to win to keep their third position on the ladder to win the much desired home final, but it was not meant to be, going down to MUHC at the challenging MUHC home ground, 6-3, with two goals to Jelly.

Men’s pennant A have had a checkered season, a win against MUHC to finish the season was exactly what was needed. Great to see Ewan Smith play his first seniors game. A 3-1 win to Southern with Jelly scoring a hat trick, giving him five goals for the weekend. We hope to see all the under 16s who have taken to the men’s section back next year playing men’s.

Men’s pennant A cooling down after the last game – THE PHONES.

The women’s pennant B team also finished their season at Melbourne University. A 1-0 win over fifth on the ladder, keeping their fourth on the ladder position.

The women’s pennant E also finished an amazing season 4-1 over MCC, after being promoted from pennant F, second on the ladder, one point behind top of the ladder Camberwell. What a year!!

The men’s pennant D team was promoted from pennant E at the end of 2017, and has not achieved the year that we all hoped for, although they have had some good results. Great to finish the season with a draw against Yarra, both teams were promoted in 2018, and Yarra were sitting 6th on the ladder. The result showing what we know the team are capable of.

Men’s pennant E also promoted in 2018 finished the season a very respectable sixth on the ladder. Last game against second on the ladder MHSOB.

Men & Women’s Metro – Round 18

The last round turned in to a fizzer for women’s metro B, with only one game in the competition going ahead. The Southern women’s metro B, well ahead of the ladder were allowed to rest with Mornington forfeiting their game. The Met B ladies clearly minor premiers will play Monash in the qualifying final.

The women’s metro A went down 0-1 to OHA, and play the game over again this coming weekend in the elimination final. With a few outs this weekend, the Met A ladies will put up a fight this coming week at Farm Rd.

Men’s metro A played a seven person Dandenong team with an unsurprising 11-1 result, with the Fisher brothers and Hayden doing most of the damage. Men’s metro B played a tight game against Bayside taking the 3 points in a 3-2 result, giving Met B the double chance with a qualifying final against St Bedes.

Junior’s Round 14

Finals

A busy night at Farm Rd did not produce the results we wanted, but a huge effort from our teams and the 16 pennant and 18s live for another final.

The under 14 pennant suffered from the lurgy going around with goalie Oli Campbell out, thanks Danny Birkett for stepping in. The match against Bayside finished full time 1-1, and a penalty shoot out followed. After the round of 5 in the shoot out, the score was still even, which led to sudden death shoot out, for another FIVE rounds. What pressure for the young team and wonderful young coaches: Georgia, Charley and Bridie. The result did not go there way in the end. Congratulations team for a great season, and to the coaches, a great result for your first year. Thanks so much for your efforts.

Under 16s continue to suffer from injuries, and Andre was needed in the shield game, thanks Matt Hayes for helping the pennant team. In pennant a 2-0 win to Knox, but pennant next week will face Gippsland at Farm Rd, and with a full team, and home ground, the result will be different. Good luck guys.

The under 18s also were suffering from the challenge of all the school plays at this time of year. A tight, tough game against St Bedes with Southern going down 3-2. Next week, at home, the 18s have another chance, with hopefully a full team against Mentone.

At Hawthorn second pitch the 14 and 16 mixed shield teams played their finals. First of the evening the 14s had a must win game against Geelong, last week Geelong had come out on top. A full team this week and a nice 2-0 win with a goal to Finn Vorrath and Ed Fitzgerald. Now they play Essendon at the hockey centre.

The 16 mixed shield drew with Waverley the week before, and with injuries still affecting the shield team, no-one was clear how it would go. Waverley scored the first goal, and the first 10-15 minutes the game was even. But the incredible team work and passing game of the team made the result clear with a 5-1 win. Straight through to the grand final, a free night this Friday for those who had other plans. Thanks Andre for filling in, we know how hard it is to not be with your own team for the final.

The 16 girls have left their best for the end of the season. After beating Footscray and TEM to make the four, they showed Waverley the door with their 1-0 win at the hockey centre. A surprise win by TEM over Essendon means that the girls will play Essendon this Friday at Camberwell for their next final to win a place in the grand final.

With the full field juniors in to finals mode, it is important not to forget our half field teams who are continuing their term 3 season. The under 10 boys continue to fly with a win over Waverley White, the under 12 boys also continue their great term 3 with a win over Mentone. The under 10 girls toughed it out against Mentone blue while the 12 girls drew with Footscray.

Masters

Masters rarely get a mention in the wrap, and we do apologise.
Great news on the masters front. The women’s masters team, promoted to 35A this year after great results in 35B Premiers 2014, 2015 and 2017 and runners Up in 2016, have made the final four in the A grade competition. They play their elimination final at the Hockey Centre on Wednesday night.

All other masters teams are in the run for finals with the men/mixed masters teams playing their last round tonight. Men 45A – currently fourth playing third Hawthorn in a must win/draw game. Men 45B also playing a must win / draw game against MHSOB, while the 45D with a true mixed team – nearly half ladies are currently top of the ladder play Brumbies.

Fixtures Finals

Fixtures for senior finals are not yet completed, but we believe they will be something like this.
