Southern United is proud of all our players, whether playing in our premier or our under 10 quarter field. For players who achieve state selection there is a great sense of achievement for the players and the club. Southern United is proud to have the largest squad of players of all clubs within the U15, U18 and U21 state teams with 18 representations.

The quality of these players is impressive.
- Nathan has been selected in a state team every year since 2010, and was awarded Best Player in the Under 18 Australian championships last year. Nathan is also a member of the Australian Futures squad. Nathan has also represented Victoria in indoor teams, being part of the winning under 15 team in 2015.
- Josh Mulder also a member of the Australian futures squad is in the under 18 team for the third year, while also being part of the Victorian indoor team for all those years.
- Brad Marais, turning 17 this year, has been representing Victoria since 2012, part of the u16 winning SSV team last year, and the Under 13 winning team in 2013.
- Alistair Hart another younger boy turning 17 this year, part of the u16 winning SSV team last year, and the Under 13 winning team in 2013.
- Olivia Downes, not turning 17 until December, this is Olivia’s second selection in the Under 18 Blue team, while being a member of the Australian Futures Squad. This is Olivia’s sixth year selected in the “first” team with her first selection in the Under 12 SSV team in 2012.
- Amy Lawton. Just turned 15, and still within the under 15 age group, this is Amy’s eleventh selection to play hockey for Victoria, and will represent Australia in the Under 16 Australian team for the second time this year. Amy has represented Victoria in football (soccer) and triathlon.
- Charley Malligan has been a club player through and through, being part of our winning girls shield team for 5 years, starting at under 13s in 20111. Charley’s third year of selection in an Under 18 state team.
- Alice Arnold has been playing state hockey since 2011 with her first selection in Under 12 School Sports Victoria and is a member of the Victorian Emerging Vipers, after playing in the Victorian under 18 blue team for the past two years.
- Emily Hamilton Smith has been selected in the Under 15 blue time for the second time, and at 15 years of age is playing her second year of women’s premier league.
- Emily Butler played in the Under 12 SSV team in 2014, and the Under 13 white team in 2016, on field. At the end of 2016 moved to play as a goal keeper after playing in goals in soccer, and has now been selected in the Under 13 indoor, Under 15 white team and Under 16 SSV as a goalie. Emily has also played in the Under 12 SSV cricket team.
- Josie Lawton at 12 is playing up an age group in under 15s. Josie was first selected for hockey state team in Under 12 SSV in 2014. Josie has also represented Victoria in Athletics.
- Will Carruthers another veteran state player, with 3 Australian Championships gold medals, first selected to play under 12 SSV in 2014.
- Craig Marais was first selected way back in 2013, and with multiple Australian gold medals under his belt is clearly a veteran. This is Craig’s second year of selection in the under 15 team. Last year he was one of only two “under age” boys selected in the under 15 Blue team.
- Billy Hanrahan like Will received his first state selection in 2014 in the Under 12 SSV and has been part of the victorious under 13 and under 12 state teams.
- Christian van der Merwe has been playing in the Southern Shield teams since playing up an age group in under 11s. Christian a strong cricketer and received his first state selection in 2015.
- Laura Johnson, this is Laura’s first state selection which is exciting given the work Laura puts in as both a player as well as helping coaching the junior players.
- This is the first time a player from Southern has been selected in the Vipers squad in the “new” National Hockey League format. Megan has added so much to the club, working with the players in the premier league team, and also helping coach our under 16 girls team.
- Carlin Walker first represented Victoria in under 12s in 2013, that year he was also a member of the U13 Victorian team that one the Aus championships and has represented Victoria in at least one team ever since.
- Olivia Carruthers also first represented Victoria in Under 12s in 2013, and played for the state since. Olivia was also in the Under 16 SSV team last year.
- This is the first SSV team for Trent. He has played in HV state teams previously.
