We knew it was going to be a tough game having been defeated earlier on in the season by Waverley. Player numbers were tight across the Masters teams – each SU team having only 11 players and we were missing our dynamic duo (Mr & Mrs Styles). It was a perfect night for hockey at the SNHC although the 9.00 time could have been better.
Waverley started off fast and with some great passing and positioning were soon on the scoreboard… these guys were really good – was that a couple of Victorian bags outside their change room!! SU weren’t going to give up and we soon had them under a bit of pressure with Scotty and Rob making some great saves. Waverley forgot to bring their tape measure and were getting frustrated at the turnovers for not giving 5m from their free hits. Wojo made a cracking hit into the goal from just inside the centre line and it was deflected just wide of the goals. We had a couple of other opportunities but couldn’t get the back of the net. So 0-1 at half time.
So into the 2nd half – Waverley were determined to score and the pace was fast and furious…. I was still trying to work out how these guys were in D grade when I was told D was their top team… makes sense now!! SU were not about to give in and there were bodies flying from the heavy tackling – at this point I decided that playing a high wing was in order. There was some great hockey being played with Warren making some amazing tackles along with Bryce, Binksy. Ross and Angus – in fact all the guys were defending really well. Waverley still managed to score another 2 goals before Bryce brought the ball up the sideline and with some great determination managed to take it into the D and have a crack at a goal – Tim was positioned perfectly for a winger (although I thought he was playing a half!!) and deflected it in for a great goal much to Waverley’s dismay!! The final whistle blew 2 seconds later……
