Match Report: Mens State League 2 vs Albury-Woodonga – Round 7

Men’s State League 2 vs Albury 26 May

After a disappointing loss to Essendon in their previous home game the third placed Southern boys took the field against equal competition leaders Albury with much at stake.  A win would keep them in touch with the ladder leaders while a loss would consign them to an unseemly mid-table scrap with the competition’s lesser ranked teams.

In a far more disciplined performance Southern prevailed by 7 goals to 5. The teams traded goals early in the first half before the consistent defensive pressure from the Southern forwards proved too much for the Albury defence to handle. Better control of the ball in the midfield and some efficient finishing in the attacking circle saw Southern to a two goal advantage which Albury was not able to pull back.

Southern captain Mark Tesoriero was understandably pleased with the team’s performance. “It’s been a little while coming but I felt that we played high-energy hockey for a bigger portion of the game today. There are still things we can work on and improve though, and with a couple of tricky games coming up in the next fortnight we’ll need to stay focused”.

In this week’s game Southern take on the rapidly improving Kew team in what will be another tough assignment.
