Match Report – Womens Metro 2 – Round 9

The Metro 2 Womens team went to Frankston to play 2nd last placed Mornington on Saturday night. I think it’s fair to say our girls got a fright when we went to half time 2 goals to Nil down. It’s really easy, having come off the week before playing the top team, to think we’ve got an easy game coming up and I think the girls went into the game assuming we would win it just by turning up. We didn’t play well as a team for the first part of the game, and without some great defending from Jenny, Corrine and our half line we could have been worse off.  Up front we often looked like we were a bit lost even though we had a lot of the play.

After the half time lollies we came out and played good team hockey with players running and passing together and the backline fending off all attacks. We had probably 70% of the possession in the early part of the 2nd half and we got one goal back which then lifted the players, and despite some wasted opportunities started to put things together. The running from the forwards was fantastic and the whole team never gave up resulting in the equalizing goal with 10 minutes to go and despite tiring legs everyone kept going and ended up running the opposition off their feet resulting in the winning goal with just a couple of minutes left on the clock. This has put the team into 2nd place on the ladder at the halfway mark so well done to everyone and let’s keep the momentum going into the business end of the season.
