Match Report – Womens Metro 2 vs Echo – Round 8

This week’s Round 8 game for the Metro 2 Women was at the Waverley ground (HFF) which is very new & very bouncy, and we were up against the competitions current leader Echo who haven’t lost a game all year & are winning games by big margins.

Our team started well and play was even for the first few minutes with each side getting a few forward runs before the ball went the other way. Some great play from Jenny on the back line repelled many of the Echo attacks and great work from Hannah & our halves got the ball into our forward line where Loren & Nicole created some really good movement and some scoring opportunities. Unfortunately Echo got a goal about 15 minutes in but we had a good share of the play and were unlucky not to get a goal ourselves before half time.

After half time Echo got a couple of fast breaks and with 3-4 attacking players making good passes, got a couple of quick goals. Our team never gave up & had some great plays and created quite a few opportunities but weren’t rewarded with their efforts with several deserving short corners not being given. Endless running from Laura & Nicole up forward & Corrine covering a heap of ground on the back line kept taking the game up to Echo but they scored another goal in the latter part of the half to go 4 nil up. Great work from Loren up forward & a scramble in the circle resulted in a goal for Lou with just a couple of minutes left, which had the final score at 4/1 to Echo.

The pleasing thing for me was that no-one ever gave up, all the girls came off the ground having given it everything & knowing that if a couple of things had of gone our way we could have finished much closer. Looking forward to the return round at home later in the year.
