Match Report – Womens Metro 2 – Round 13

An important game for the Met 2 women to come back after a last minute draw in the last round with us versing Hawthorn who had won one game less than us for the year. Again we started really well this week, but the big difference was that we scored a goal in the first 5 minutes with Coxy converting really well from some good lead up work from Nicole. That relieved some pressure for the team and they played with a bit more freedom for the next few minutes, being unlucky not to score again soon after. Some really good defense from the halves where Hannah & Stephanie kept the ball in our attacking zone for the most part & again Nicole ran herself ragged with great attacks from centre half. When Hawthorn got the ball into their attacking zone we had the solid defence of jenny & a sweeping Corinne repelling them most of the time. The first half went really well with our team having probably 60% of the ball in attack, with the only down side being some passes were a bit light on & getting intercepted, however Nikki managed to get one of her two goals for the game before the half time whistle.

The team started strongly again in the first few minutes and Hilary was unlucky not to get a goal, as was Loz who put one into the back of the net but it was a fraction after the umpire signalled a short corner. The remainder of the half was a bit of a see-saw with the ball going up & down both ends of the ground creating opportunities for both teams with our girls making the most of it getting 2 more goals through Nikki & Jenny before Hawthorn got a goal just before the final whistle went. Many thanks to the ladies who subbed for the team today, Anna did a great job on the wing despite having a virus, Hilary spent her time o nthe forward line & was unlucky not to get a couple of goals & Nicolette did a terrific job as a half not only defending but doing some good link work with the forwards.
