MPL Double Header weekend match reports

Match Report:

Round 4 – v Hawthorn at H1 3.30pm.

The first twenty minutes of the match were hotly contested with much of the play in mid-field. But when Hawthorn converted a penalty stroke which many thought was fortuitous, the Strikers seemed to flag a little.

It was quite unusual to see no Penalty Corners awarded in the first half and only one each in the second, with Hawthorn scoring from theirs.

Both teams scored two goals in an even second half, but the Strikers were unable to take the next step with the result being a 3 – 2 win the home side, Hawthorn.

Goals: Todd McHardy 2

Match Report:

Round 19 – v Greensborough at MBN 3.30pm.

Playing the reigning Premiers is always a daunting prospect but as they had three players out on International U21 duty, we fancied our chances to test their depth. The Strikers showed exceptional will in attack to grab the initiative, racing to a 2 – 0 lead at the break.

We knew that ‘Burra was not going to take this lying down and they came storming back in the second half to make it 2 – 2 after some very controlled mid-field lead up work into attack.

Both sides had several chances to score in the second half. David Hammond again showed great judgement to keep the opponents at bay whilst at the other end, our forwards were somewhat unlucky to hit the cross bar once and have a goal saved on the line by a defenders over head ‘tennis shot’.

The fast and furious pace continued right to the end though the visitors ultimately prevailed in the last minute to take the lead at 3 – 2. A Southern United last ditch effort PC on the final whistle was parried by the Greensborough ‘keeper to give them the points.
