Farm Road was awash with sunshine and sparkled under clear blue skies as a good crowd gathered in eager anticipation of a big Saturday afternoon’s worth of SUHC top grade hockey in support of Peter Mac. Round 13 was HV’s “Fair Go, Sport!” round to promote sexual and gender diversity within our sport. SUHC teams from U15 and above participated in this worthwhile initiative with all of our captains looking very fetching in their rainbow socks.
It was also Junior Family Day with the highlight being two exhibition matches that featured some of SUHC future stars from our U9 and U11 age groups before the MSL and WSL games. It was great to see so many kids and their parents at Farm Road enjoying their game and watching SUHC’s senior teams play. The bouncy castle got a fair workout as well, by the way. And the big crowd wasn’t disappointed.
MPA
Started proceedings against Greensborough. While they started slowly and conceded an early goal, MPA rallied strongly and played some scintillating hockey to take out the match 6-2 and 3rd spot on the ladder.
MSL
Followed and they too started slowly allowing visitors to take the scoring initiative before asserting some control to take a 2-1 lead into half time. The second half was a lot better from SUHC who piled on 6 unanswered goals to take the game 7-1. Skipper Mark Tesoriero lead the way with 4 followed by Mark Scully with a brace of 2 and most significantly 1 goal to Joshua Ephraums; his first in MSL. Well done Josh!!
MSL are now 2nd on the ladder and face league leader Essendon away this coming weekend.
WSL
Took on Yarra in a tight affair that saw SUHC lead 1-0 at half time after an Olivia Finlayson goal. The fortunes of both sides swung from end to end in the second half but the result was put beyond doubt with a fine conversion from Jess Jacobs following a defensive mix up from the visitors. Two goals to nil at full and 3rd on the ladder with 2nd spot up for grabs this week away against Powerhouse/St Kilda.
WPB
Rounded off a good day for SUHC day with a fine 2-1 victory over TEM to move into 4th spot on a very tight WPB league ladder.
Stop the presses!!
Sunday at Farm Road
M1SE – If Mike Stansby had any hair, he would have been pulling it out in tufts on Sunday afternoon! After the softest of starts, M1SE (our fifths) had conceded 2 goals to 3rd placed Old Xav’s (their seconds) only then to fight back valiantly and dominate the visitors to get to 2 all with two minutes to play. And then… a very dodgy penalty corner was awarded to the visitors for a very innocuous tackle outside the circle; a variation played out wide to the left and then across the face of goal that was knocked in… 3-2 to Xav’s and despair for poor old Mike. Sport can be a travesty sometimes.
WPC – Showed that they are improving each week by downing TEM 7 – 0 for their second win for the season.
