Footscray defeated The Strikers 8-4 in the previous round at Farm Road but had been inconsistent over the season against other teams. This was a game which would define their chance of making the finals and they set out with a mission to do just that. They scored a field goal in the first 10 minutes and followed up with a Penalty Corner goal in the next two minutes to set the pace. In fact, their first half yielded 6 Penalty Corners from 11 circle incursions. The Strikers managed no Penalty Corners for the game.
The half time score was 3- 0 in favour of Footscray, which made life difficult for the Strikers. However, to their credit, the visitors made a game of it in the second half and scored a field goal early, to give a glimmer of hope. The rest of the game was an even tussle with no further scores. The home side, Footscray, had virtually confirmed their goal of making finals leaving the Strikers looking to a win against Mentone in the following day’s double header to finish on a high note.
