Southern United’s men’s Premier league team is through to the grand final for a second successive season after winning the preliminary final against Camberwell. The prelim against hockey juggernaut Camberwell was a rematch of the 2018 grand final, and had just as much pressure, excitement and controversy. The 2-1 result to Southern pushed Camberwell out of the grand final, the first time it has missed the season decider since 2011.

Southern United took home two back-to-back premierships in the junior grand finals on Friday night. Playing the highest grade of junior hockey, the Under 16 mixed shield team won the re-run of the 2018 grand final against Doncaster.

A first for Southern

It was a weekend of highs and lows for the Southern United teams. The Premier League teams played Greensborough in the final round of the season. The men’s firsts went into the game on top of the ladder, three points ahead of Waverley. In a tough and physical game against Burra, Southern came from behind but couldn’t quite get there, going down 4-3. But Southern United did win the minor premiership for the first time.
