United Youngster stars on Hockey One Debut

It was a big night of hockey last Friday with Hockey Club Melbourne taking on Canberra Chill at Melbourne’s State Netball and Hockey Centre in the Sultana Bran Hockey One League. Four Southern United players took to the pitch with 17-year-old Craig Marais making his debut for the Hockey Club Melbourne team, together with Amy Lawton and Nathan Ephraums. Manabu Yamashita — who played the season with Southern United — was part of the Canberra Chill team.

Premier Performance for Southern Men

Southern United swept to back-to-back men’s Premier League titles when it routed Footscray 5-0 at the State Netball and Hockey Centre on Saturday. United had stunned the Victorian hockey scene last year in taking out the premiership, and it proved it was no fluke by finishing as minor premier in 2019. A loss in the first final against Footscray was a setback, but strong wins in weeks two and three of the finals series brought Southern up against Footscray in the last match of the season. From the first push back, the result did not seem in doubt with the frenetic work rate of the team.
